We just picked up our 3400 this AM, and the DW has been plowing through the 50 lbs of manuals, paperwork, directions, etc. She says on page 2 of the laminated instructions it states that the metal tray must be used all the time except when in the microwave mode. As noted above, you'd think they'd high light it or at least put it in big bold print.
Call the dealer and plead ignorance..."Don't know what happened, the damn thing burned up."
