I think that there was a problem with the thermostat, and the high limit thermostat. The temp's obviously exceeded the operating conditions in any mode. The fact that the L.R. element wouldn't shut down for 2-3 minutes is suspect as well. They would not design an oven that would let the temperatures get high enough to melt plastic in it and burn wiring.
Metal plate, or no metal plate, it shouldn't have done that.
I think you are good for the Warranty. JMHO.
