I will let others make suggestions on how to best secure an outside gen, since I never owned one. But I will throw out a suggestion that might help as far as general "campsite security". I bought one at Harbor Freight Tools and went back and got two more. They are wireless motion sensors that have a remote alarm. I position two of them under the Montana facing areas where our chairs and/or bikes are parked. When we are inside for the night I simply turn on the alarm receiver so if there is motion around the bikes or chairs we are immediately alerted.

I have used them now for about 10 months. The batteries last a long time and they never give off false readings if you point them correctly. With one of these you would know if someone comes up to your gen set.
