With the fiver hitched up, I lost almost all the clearace between the rear upper spring bumper pads and frame and would evenually destroy the pads similiar to the drop what you are describing.. The air bags eliminated that. With the bags inflated there is basically no drop. Re lifting the truck, my booklet indicates that it is recommended to lift by the axle, but that a frame lift can be done but first totally deflat the bags.
