When we lost a ground prong on the shore cable last year, a portable unit would not have protected us. The hardwired unit would not send power to the rig due to lost ground. It took a while to find the problem, as the prong was still in the molded plug, but broken internally. Very glad I went with the hardwired unit, and I like the remote display too.
