...well, I guess each unit is wired a bit differently. Went out this weekend and tried the "small regular switch" and yup, it turned-on the fireplace. I leave the fireplace in the "on" postion and use the small switch to turn it off from "downstairs". Thought I was loosing my marbles after reading Ron & Melinda's post---so I had to try it again.
