Was there in Sept.. My advice would be the earlier you get in the park the better. We made it a point to be in the park at or near sunrise...great for animal viewing and traffic was at a minimum. Road to Mammoth was under construction...it was a mess in spots...I felt sorry for those in DP and on motorcycles (have had both) as they sat in line not knowing what was ahead. But as others have said unless you are willing to travel the extra miles to get around the park this is the only option. Grades in the park are no biggie at all.
