Johnnyg, I just traced that route on the e-maps and SHEESH!, that's a tough one. You're fan clutch was doing it's job. The roar is a bit surprising at first but you'll get used to it. My '99 did it, my '08 does it also.

If you're ever on a piece of road that you feel ot too steep, and traffic is light, you can stop and drop your 4x4 transfer case into low range (if you have the manual transfer case, NOT THE SHIFT ON THE FLY system). This will reduce the strain on the transmission by 50% but your top speed is lilited to about 25. But you can pull most any hill will ease.
