You just have to remove the screws holding them. They can be felt if you reach up under the valance. In ours, most of them are screwed into the bottom of cabinets, the others have L-shaped brackets under the valance. One of the pictures shows the screw locations.
If you do get new shades, I would still suggest installing the bobbins as pictured, rather than the way the do at the factory. Wind a couple of turns of cord around the bobbin and use the bobbin to fine tune the tension, so that they will just stay up on their own.
We were told that we should travel with the shades up, to reduce cord fraying. That said, we usually do leave them down.
