I upgraded mine about 10 years ago with metal hinge to connect the pivot end to the slide out. Easy to do--buy hinge, measure for holes, drill, attach with good screws and flat washers--go RVing!
With a break in the middle--attach the hinge between the two pieces. I would still install another hinge at the pivot point.
