Our HC uses the basement as a return air plenum. The basement is poorly insulated, having only a plywood panel between the storage space and the generator space at the front. The generator space is open to the outside in several places. When the t-stat shuts off the furnace, cold air from the basement rushes into the living room via the RA register.
