Because the light indicators are not to be trusted on how full the poop tank actually is, I always wait for the burp in the toilet to tell me that the tank is full.
Actually the tank is not totally full but high enough to reach the bottom of the vent tube. That's why the toilet burps.
To me it's the best indicator of the tank level & I just go out & dump the tank.
No harm is done by this procedure that I know of.
