The jacket on mine didn't crack but did pull out of the plug. I think the weight of the cord contributed to one of the conductors working its way out of the lug in the plug. Didn't notice it until I only had power to one half of the unit. That loose lug had arced pretty bad. That was enough to convince me to buy the adapter.
