A couple of years ago a friend in a Montana showed me where he had changed the trash drawer into a storage area with pullout shelves. He moved the handle from the top to the side and filled the holes to match the cabinet. He did a beautiful job. I wrote down his instructions. What he used sounds very much like what others, above, have already identified.

He filled the holes with Elmers wood filler (stainable, interior, sandable, per my notes), in Golden Oak. He then used a natural stain.

So, if you need to fill holes, hopefully this will help. I haven't used it myself but mtmytmax did a beautiful job on theirs.
