In the Navy they are called Gator Freighters. They carry landing craft, helos, and lots of Marines. They are part of the amphibious fleet, and as such are responsible for making landings where ever needed. They can land troops by helo, or landing craft, hovercraft, tanks or amtracks (amphibious tracked vehicles). They usually have a "well deck" that can be flooded and a large tail gate that lowers so the landing craft can exit... Dave
