Don,
If you would like to get off of I-70 and see more of Colorado. Get off at Frisco CO at the second exit and take Hwy 9 East toward Breckenridge. Breckenridge is a ski area and touristy. If you continue on through Breckenridge on Hwy 9 it will take you over Hoosier Pass to Fairplay CO. It is a beautiful drive. Hoosier Pass has several switchbacks and is about 11,000 ft. and has beautiful mountains at the top. It is not a problem. I have been over it so many times I don't pay much attention to it. You just take your time like everyone else. Semis go over it all the time.
At Fairplay you turn right for about 1 mile on 285 and then go left again on Hwy 9 to Hartsel. At Hartsel you have a choice of going straight to Colorado Springs or turn right onto Hwy 9 again and go to Canon City and the Royal Gorge. Either way you will see different parts of CO and you can still end up in Denver and I-70 again if you choose to.
