Any time anyone inquires about Carlsbad, there are always comments recommending avoiding US 285 between Carlsbad and I-20, maybe even I-10. Apparently a very rough highway due to heavy oil field traffic.

If you plan to ride the Cumbres & Toltec steam train (and I recommend it), take the bus from Chama to Antonito and ride the train back. Antonito is in the flat dry San Luis valley. The train starts there and begins its climb into mountains and over the high passes. Would be somewhat anticlimactic the other direction.
