Ease of use is the reason you would leave the inverter on while connected to shore power. The inverter senses 120V and, if present, passes it through without drawing from the 12V battery. When you disconnect from shore power the inverter automatically switches over to 12V battery power.

If you turn it off when on shore power, you have to remember to turn it back on when you disconnect.
