Sounds like a loose connection somewhere. Possibly on the switch itself or on the circuit breaker. A loose connection can cause you to get a voltage reading but when the circuit is loaded ( You hooked up your lamp )
The voltage appears to disappear. This is voltage with no current.
I've seen a defective breaker do this also.
