When I had a rat and mouse problem in my house (I lived next to agricultural land), I found these Victor Electronic Rat Traps worked really well. I had the older M240 model, I think there's a new M241 model out now, not sure how well it does.

The trap zaps the rat or mouse, then you just dump it out. Worked a lot better than the classic snap-traps. It's instant death so I think it's more humane than glue traps and poison. My office had a mouse die in the walls from a poison trap and the smell was there for months.

The electronic zap trap kills about 50 times on a set of (4) C batteries.
