It is most certainly "grand" and on my list of places to see again.
Years ago I was in Phoenix on an extended business trip. With nothing to do on the weekend, I planned to go to the canyon then. But on Friday it snowed 19" in Flagstaff and I pretty much ruled it out. But Saturday broke clear as a bell. I figured they had the equipment to clear the roads, so Sunday I went.
Well after a white knuckle trip over the hump at Flagstaff, the roads were completely dry right up to the park gate. Then a fresh layer of several inches of snow in the park. Weather was beautiful, clear and about 40 degrees and absolutely no wind. The snow had scared most everyone from coming. So I drove the west rim drive and at almost every overlook, I was the only human there. And very few human prints in the snow. With no wind and the crisp clear air, it was so quiet, you could actually hear the river at some overlooks.
A once in a lifetime experience unless you live nearby.
