Ours broke too - but I made a new curtain for the window as I disliked the one that was there.
I doubled the fabric and put pockets on it - my husband uses the pockets for his eye glasses, tissues, etc. And it blocks more light than just the shade. Seems like that window usually ends up aimed at the sunrise.
We don't use the window much for seeing out or ventilation unless the nights are really hot.
