Put a volt meter on your battery when you try the slides while not connected to shore power and see how much the voltage drops.

It sounds like your batteries are weak, and shore power, and therefore converter running, provides enough power to help the batteries run the slides. Your batteries may be failing, or are simply not adequately charged. Only way to know for sure is a battery load test.
