We did the same thing on ours. Removed the pin on the left side. Closed the latch in the middle making it solid and bought another latch just like it and put on the top left side. That keeps it from coming open while traveling. It works great and I can get at all the dials on the washer/dryer and can open the freezer that sits on top of it.
