Getting water into the carpet and sucking it back out works especially if you can do it right away. We have used a squirt bottle of warm water saturating it, then followed up with a shop vac. Or rent a steam cleaner, it works well. Try not to use a lot of soap when cleaning carpet as the residue can remain in carpet causing it to look dirty. If a stain gets in and you can't get it out with just water, then I would say to use a carpet stain remover and follow directions on container. Also, blot, don't rub.
