You are correct. If you swap sides then you are just changing the direction of the tire. This does nothing to help the situation. If it is just one tire then the spare could be installed till getting back home. Spare tires are just that, spares. Spares don't have to have as good of tread as the rest of the rig.I had one tire out of alignment because of a broken shackle bolt and the tire wore very quickly.
