We just finished our third 9k+ mile trip (and had two 3k+ mile ones as well). If only spending one overnight, I'll have the fresh water 1/3 full with everything else empty before leaving a CG. Two overnights means 2/3 full, and three means a full one. If there's a chance to dump on the way (rest stop or whatever) I'll take it, but I don't worry about it as the weights still the same only in different places. We've gone five days dry camping, but that means being careful with water usage. Sooner or later, the wrong tanks get full and the other one gets empty.

It's just physics that the less weight you tow, the better mpg you'll get, but I haven't experienced a tremendous difference with a few hundred pounds or so.
