As to the black squirrels--they suddenly appeared and stayed for about two years in Lewisburg PA in the late 60's. Word was they had come south from Canada to avoid a harsh winter--and the massive oak grove at the university was a big draw. We always wondered if they sent advance scouts and how they travelled all that distance. The bio dept did a study of their interaction with the resident gray squirrels--not always a happy adjustment. They disappeared as suddenly as they came. Have not heard of their return.
Mother Nature is full of surprises.
