I suppose it would depend on the floor plan. For example a kitchen with a lots of appliances and cabinets on that wall doesn't leave much room for windows.
We actually looked for windows on either side for our rig preference. The fridge is on one side with the table and chairs (a natural place to put a window at the table). The irony is that DW hates that when we sit at the table enjoying a meal, she dislikes that passerbys can peer inside, so the day/night shades are always down.
On the other side was the range and microwave and next to that the kitchen sinks (another good place for a curb/doorside window). The sacrifice was cabinet space, but we have been able to work with that.
