The red regulator keeps the cross over pipe pressured when you remove your tank to refill. With out it the propane will escape and when you hook up your new tank and open the valve the rush of vapor to fill that void can cause the tank safety valve to shut off. On our unit the propane is in the front and the fridge and stove is in the back. I have not heard of anyone having those units having a problem.
