Sounds like the OP has a standard older style thermostat, there is no "black" slide on the underside of any of the electronic thermostats that I have seen. I would remove the cover from the thermostat and you will find two wires, short those two wires which is what the thermostat does when there is a call for heat, if that does not produce action at the furnace then you have a problem with the furnace or where these wires connect to the furnace control board.
You will need to get to the control board on the furnace and check for voltages, loose wires there.
