We've done a little bit of traveling, as well, which is exactly why we do use a filter. Mine is home-made with a Watts regulator, and standard whole-house filter housing, making filters and parts easy to come by. Last park we stayed at-Fort Monroe required me to change the filters every 3 weeks, they would completely clog up with particulate and rusty-looking sludge. Needless to say we drank bottled water but the filtered seemed to work fine for washing clothes/showers, etc.
