As Steve mentioned, it is relatively easy. There are different models, but on mine, the plastic cover around the bottom just snaps off. Then I removed the metal band holding the top to the bottom, and disconnected the water hose to the top section. Then the top could be lifted free of the bottom. After cleaning it up and lubing the seal, be sure when you are putting the top back on, to center the hole in the top section carefully on the bottom section and seal when you begin clamping it back down. Mine had gotten slightly off center and I think that may have had a little to do with it not holding water properly.
There was really no odor and no "gross factor" as you might expect.
