Dick in the past I have had good experiences with them. One time when calling them I got someone that didn't know squat about satellite tv. So I asked for a supervisor, the person went away for a little while and came back to me with what I wanted. When calling these banks of phone people it never hurts to ask for a supervisor.
If you are getting the HD Receiver, my guess is they want the SSN to cover themselves for the leased equipment. They commit you for two years for a monthly fee and they provide you with the equipment. They still own the Receiver. I don't remember, but I don't think I had to give them a SSN about two years ago when I upgraded to HD. Give them a call back and you will get a new person.
