a heat pump looks pretty much like an A/C unit, it is the reverse of the A/C unit, draws the heat from outside, transfers it into the space, still uses the compressor, but has a reversing valve for the refrigerant.
Your stick house A/C unit blows hot air from the fan up in the air on a hot day, cool air inside through the furnace-A/C ducting. That process is reversed in the winter.
I don't like them because the compressor, (the most expensive part in your unit,) runs 12 month's out of the year, in extreme conditions. I wouldn't have one. I have probably changed over 1,000 compressors out, in them and conventional units.
