Diane, Dennis , Fort McAllister is approx 10 to 15 miles from downtown Savannah but easy to get there. the campground has a website. it was also a confederate fort, and they have restored it to just the way it was. Hope this helps, and like steve said be sure to see tybee Island and the lighthouse. also uncle bubbas (paula deens brother) oyster house is a right on the way. and the downtown is great! you can part at the visitor center for free, take a walking tour or ride the trolly or , Dennis to get in a few good points with diane take her on a horse drawn surry tour! lol.
