In defense of the locomotive engineers, it is federal law that the horns sound at EVERY intersection. 2 Long blasts, a short blast, and a then a final long one. If there are 2 intersections close, you get the show twice, or even 3 times if needed.
Most locomotives have a night muffle on them and if the engineer is thoughtful, the longs won't be long, and the shorts are very short!
I am not sticking up for the way they sound, but my career was 32 years of the railroad industry, and this is how they work. Hope your sleep comes easy when you arrive back home!
