We just drove from the west coast of Washington to an island off the coast of Maine and back. We had reservations on the way to Maine because I had made tee times at Whistling Straits and other golf courses. On the way back, we decided to wing it. I tried to decide the night before, or sometime during the morning as we were driving. We never had a problem finding a campsite. We never just showed up without contacting them first, but both of our daughters did as they were working their way across the country. One daughter decided to wing it in both directions, and the other decided to just wing it on the way back like we did. We all took different routes in both directions, and we all found great places to stay.
