We've installed a whole house water filter attached to our bottle water softener. I used a clear filter bowl so I can see the filter element inside the the bowl as it gets filled and I can change it when needed. I have the whole set up sitting in a plastic tub next to the convenient center inside the basement. Reason being, if you leave a clear bowl out in the sun it will develop moss or mold when it does not if the sun does not reach it.
