There was a recall years ago, maybe 2013, that Dometic issued for defective electric motors in the awnings causing this issue, but yours wouldn’t be the same thing. I wonder, seeing that you were able to retract the awning OK, that maybe the awning switch is bad and possibly made contact that caused the motor to operate. That would be the only way it could extend the awning unless there was a broken part.
