I am keying in on the fact that you said there was some smoke from your converter/power dist unit. If there is no output from the charger that might explain the batteries not holding a charge. When you plugged in the generator were there loads connected? In other words perhaps you drew an arc when plugging in with the loads connected and the gen output on.
