We mainly heat with two electric heaters so the furnace only kicks on below around 25 degrees so we keep the stairs blocked when we know the furnace won't be turning on and unblocked when it does....

I did this last week from Jersey to Utah and it really doesn't even go close to Chicago. I just made sure to gas up before hitting the area and just cruised right through not a problem at all.

Also forgot to mention our original 2008 furnace had a cracked burn chamber so we upgraded to the newest 35,000 BTU furnace.
