In a usenet newsgroup I used to follow, many people switched to the two six-volt golfcart batteries and swore by them. When I have to replace our battery I may do the same thing.

Yes, they're 12v. The sounds and smell may have been from the converter's charger putting 12v into a 6v battery and the no juice situation because of just 6v of battery trying to power 12v systems.

I'm reading this thread with interest. I've heard in other forums that two 6v batteries is the best way to go. Or four if that's what you want. I'm reluctant to toss out our perfectly good 12v...
