We did the same thing to raise and lower...

We did the same thing to raise and lower stabilizers on a previous TT.

A downside to your fix is that you lose some valuable storage space, but if that is not an issue for you, then it is definitely easier than having to crawl under the trailer to haul the spare out for...

I had to get under the trailer and apply some pressure to the mechanism to get it to lower...if there is a trick to it, don't know what it is.
