Have found a product that looks like it will do the job, zavlar waterproof sealant that hardens like the original plastic and is put on with a roller so goes on very smooth and just a little thinner...

thanks everybody, I played with the regulator and then took face plate off the furnace and played with wires, not sure which one worked but we now have heat. thanks again
