My CA Problem

I live in Albuquerque because we have a business here. All our kids/grand kids live in CA (Orange County, Santa Barbara and near Sacramento). We are about to sell the business. DW, of course, wants to be reasonably close to the kids. I hate everything about CA except the weather. Most of all I don't want to go broke paying the high taxes of the rapidly deteriorating economy there. DW feels the need to have a home base. Need some wise advice on how to mitigate this problem.

how about Yuma or Lake Havasu or Kingman AZ? Not the biggest cities or nicest, perhaps, but 4 hours from the coast. Low income taxes and property taxes.

I don't know about Nevada - Vegas and Reno wouldn't be too far to drive.

Montana Man 02-22-2019 11:58 AM

I would say you are screwed. I live in between Sac and OC. You are right about life in CA. Living anywhere decent is overpriced. Living in the central valley is unhealthy and overrun with those that are paid not to work. Social security is not taxed but is made up for in other ways. My 5 year old 2014 Ram dmv renewal is $679 plus smog checks. The monty is $524. Fuel is notoriously high and we are not told where the taxes on it goes. There's more but... And don't even talk about the politics here.

We are looking for a way out of here. AZ and NV are on the short list. I would still like to rv the sierras and coast and see kids on occasion.

Good luck. Sometimes a guy has to choose between being married or happy:hide:

Don’t come to Ca to retire, the places mentioned are very economical and close.

Last2Die 02-22-2019 02:43 PM

Cant wait for the wife to retire so we can GTFO of California. I guess if you have the money its fine...Montana Man is right the politics UGH....

fatcatzzz 02-22-2019 02:55 PM

As mentioned California is NOT retirement friendly. Only come if you want to give up half retirement, well maybe not half but a big chunk. Born and raised in foothills of the Sierras. Sad to see what California is becoming. We left a year ago.

Find a place in AZ or NV for your S&B and then use you rig to spend time in CA.

Thank you everyone. Can anyone give me info about the Reno area? I do know that the last time I drove over Donner Pass on the 80 the road was incredibly chewed up from the truck chains needed thru the winters. Winters are tough there but summers in the Lake Havasu area of AZ are tough. Good grief, if the kids had just picked a sane place to live and work my old age would be happier.

Google Sperlings. They rate just about every town. Also Accuweather. They have a good way of reviewing past temperatures everyday. Also give Carson City a look.

We solved our CA problem, re-established our domicile to South Dakota and now travel where the weather is good, travel through CA a couple times a year to visit family, then keep on going. Don't want to hassle with drivers licenses, taxes, and all the other wasteful things going on there. We are in AZ right now, were in NV before this, and heading for TX in a month or so. It's a tough life, but some of us have to do it :D

I want to leave here so bad but the wife can't seem to get the idea. We could live anywhere else so much better. We have kids here but we could blow in once a year which is more than they visit us now.

McIver 02-23-2019 09:42 AM

Was reluctant to tell the DW about the idea of not moving near the kids. Had her read this last night and thanks to things like "your screwed" and the vehicle registration costs (just paid about $250 here, NM, for a SUV, my F250 AND the Monty) she is now on board with the "Travel / Drop-In Method" of family relations. This is not a joint property state but you guys saved my butt THANKS,

The solution to the problem: when the business sells we are going to do a 360 and get the hell out of here (keep this SB as home base) and follow the travel advice given by all above. Now if I can just stop paying attention to domestic politics all will be well.

What type of business do you have?

We own a retail dance wear store. I would like to claim that we got into this business when I retired from dancing with Chippendales but despite all the Speedo evidence that is not true. The DW was a successful manufactures rep in that field.

Thanks. I’m in the machine shop business. I got in business because I was out of work, couldn’t find a job and was hungry. I’ve always had 3 good reasons to work breakfast, lunch and dinner or like we say down here in south land supper.

For me it was breakfast dinner and supper. LOL
Iowa
California is not nice.
San Francisco had $180,000,000. (million)
and what did they do with that money you ask?
Well they gave $30,000,000 (million) to the schools and the rest to the homeless.

So if you want to help the homeless than move here if not move further away.

It's cheaper to buy a new truck every year than move here.

RoadRunnerTR21 02-24-2019 08:23 AM

I don't envy you folks on the west coast.

scattershot 02-27-2019 02:13 PM

DON’T move to the people’s republik. Find someplace nice and let the kids come to you.

I'd take a look at the Reno - Carson City area. Beautiful country and inexpensive. Within 3 hours of Sacramento. My wife and I enjoy going there multiple times during the year: Reno Air Races, Hot August Nights, Street Vibrations....
