New hitch

Going tomorrow for a hitch for our new Ram 3500 8í bed with puck system.
Our current Reese 20k# is for the rail system. There is an adapter available which will allow me to use my older hitch. My only concern is whether the hitch height will allow the proper clearance.
Any suggestions or concerns?

Are you asking about what other hitches are out there? or asking about the additional height if you use your current hitch?

Lots of hitches out there, just depends on what you want. Look at etrailer.

As for the added platform for your current hitch it adds about 4 inches in height.

Leaning toward Andersen Ultimate. Raining cats and dogs and will be all day so hitch shopping will wait until tomorrow

Not to hijack your post, but i also am concerned about the height difference of using the adapter on my Curt Q20 going to the GM puck system. Seems like 4 inches in added height would be A LOT. I know i probably don't have that much adjustment.

If I remember right if you measure to the bottom of the bed and to the camper hitch (both from the ground) the difference should be close to the height of the hitch-- is that right?

Will be picking up the new truck Tuesday and trying to figure out what i need to make the changeover.

This topic always opens up a can of worms but I'll put my 2 cents worth in now and watch the flames begin. My choice is a B&W Companion hitch. Now let it rip!

No can of worms. Seems like the choice of hitch is as subjective as which floorplan is best, or which TV is best. There are so many viable choices. I love the smooth, quiet, light-weight simplicity of the Andersen Hitch and it works great for me.

I don't have the puck system so I don't know what impact it has on the overall height of the hitch setting but there are a lot of sound solutions.

Seems like if the OP has a good hitch that he likes and works well for him then that would be the best solution if it can be set up satisfactorily.

My hitch guy is going to let us borrow the Reese adapter to see if it works ok

Picked up a used adapter, to try, from my hitch guy.
Everything dropped in just like I hoped. Height between bed rails and camper are higher. Is there a minimum/maximum height?

Great donít forget to post some pics when you get it setup.

Caniel 08-26-2019 03:44 PM

Working off memory here: I seem to remember between 6" and 8" of clearance between bed rails and camper being suggested.

Sparatacus 08-26-2019 04:41 PM

Yep, thatís ideal.

jetskier 08-26-2019 05:04 PM

Since you have an 8' bed, you might look at the 20k Reese Goosebox. You only have a ball in the bed after unhooking.

jsb5717 08-26-2019 05:25 PM

Yep, 6" minimum is a good rule of thumb. Even that might be a little too tight if you have steep side to side angles to navigate while turning

What is the height now? How level is the trailer?

Taking Monte and truck in tomorrow. Hitch guy is giving me almost what I paid for my current hitch plus I won’t have to buy the adapter.
Getting the new Reese.

Wow, that sound like a great deal, I have my base slider hitch up for sale but it's hard because I'm only selling the base. Post up some pics please sir when you get it

c214dick 08-27-2019 04:41 PM

Will do. Now I need to figure out how to post pics. Either that or meet me at the rally

If you have a Curt Q20 you can order the bottom puck system from Curt for your for your hitch that's what I did.
